Meri Mneyan
Hunter College

Current Faculty Mentor

Ekaterina Likhtik

Summer Research Training

Marine Biological Laboratory

Meri is a junior at Hunter College, majoring in Biological Sciences, and a proud member of the Yalow Honors Program.

During the summer, she worked in Dr. Scott Brady's lab, where she researched the fast axonal transport of squid giant neurons. This project involved introducing mutated proteins associated with various neurodegenerative diseases. By utilizing a video-enhanced contrast-differential interference contrast (VEC-DIC) microscope, Meri was able to observe live cargo transport in both anterograde and retrograde directions, determining the transport rates in real-time.

Currently, Meri is contributing to research in Dr. Likhtik's lab at Hunter College. The focus of her work is on understanding how different brain regions contribute to learning and the extinction of fear. Through this research, the lab aims to uncover the neural mechanisms behind emotion regulation, which has important implications for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Meri's long-term goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, with a focus on understanding neurodegeneration in neuronal connections.
