Belkairys Taveras is a rising junior at Hunter College majoring in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology and minoring in Sociology. Her research interests are in exploring children's neurocognitive abilities including memory, perception, attention, and decision-making, and investigating their interplay with emotions. Understanding psychological and behavioral tools, she aims to uncover the mechanisms underlying cognition, ultimately contributing to the understanding of the development of children with special needs and emotional regulation.
In the summer of 2024, under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Monk in the Laboratory of Translational and Developmental Neuroscience (TaDLab) at the University of Michigan, Belkairys’s research project focuses on how sleep quality affects adolescents’ decision-making abilities by using computational models and behavioral data to understand the connection between how environmental factors affects cognitive development. Upon returning to New York, she looks forward to working in the lab of Dr. Nesha Burghardt for the academic year. Belkairys Taveras plans to gain experience in research to ultimately, pursue a PhD in Neuroscience and study neurodivergent diseases in children and how they affect cognition. |
